Stir-fied Cute'cumber


This is a mini cucumber, a.k.a. cute’cumber, only about 5cm long x 1.5cm diameter.  I get it from the backyard of Sarikei home.  Nobody seems to know the origin of this Cucumis, be it indigenous or introduced.  But, one thing for sure, its edible.

First, I sliced them longitunally,  then stir-fried with minced garlic and anchovies.  Flavoured with a little bit of oyster sauce.  It 's crunchy, taste almost similar to normal cucumber.   I think it may be suitable as an ingredient for salad too.

Breadnut Soup

Breadnut ( Artocarpus camansi ) is known as buah pulur in Sarawak.  Similar to breadfruit ( Artocarpus altilis ) in term of size, a breadnut is easily distinguished by its spiny skin, less compact pulp, and numerous seeds.

Pulur is grown mainly for the nutritious seeds.  Seeds are often roasted or boiled.  Pulp of young immature pulur fruit also consumed as vegetables, often cooked in soups.

Just like other fruit of Moraceae family, breadnut bleeds milky sap, when the parenchymatous tissues are cut, making it is a messy task cutting a pulurHowever, the seeds, when cooked, have the taste and aroma similar to chestnut.  Worth the effort .    Nyamai ! ( means delicious in Iban language )

Stir-fried Baby Corn


Baby corn is taken from corn harvested early while the ears are very small and immature.    Baby corn is eaten whole, cob included.

Miding


Miding is frond tips of Stenochlaena palustris, a fern of Blechnaceae family.  It is commonly found growing in freshwater peat swamps area.

The frond tips are used traditionally as vegetables, stirfried with prawn paste, anchovies or dried prawn.  Foochows in Sarawak like to stirfry it with some ginger and redwine.

蛋糕 Plain Cake

This is an easy cake to bake.  
Used only eggs, flour and sugar.  No butter involved ! 
Yet, loads of sugar..... lots of calories.



Mom says the late grandma likes to have it with curry. 
Yeah ! That’s right !  Curry !
Now the eccentric habit runs in 舅舅, 舅母 and some relatives.  
Even 小姨丈 also picked up the obsession


 
ingredients :
360 g flour ( too much flour, the cake will crack )
400 g sugar ( add less sugar, less sweet but healthier )
8 eggs


method :
beat the sugar and eggs until creamy...
slowly add in the flour, mix well...
steam for 25 minutes.
